Privacy Policy: CareerJournal.com

Dow Jones & Company, Inc., publisher of CareerJournal.com, and its affiliates (hereafter referred to collectively as "Dow Jones") are committed to maintaining the privacy of personal information that you provide to us when using CareerJournal.com (the "Web Site"). This Privacy Policy describes how we treat personal information received about you when you visit the Web Site.

Links to Other Web Sites

We make content or services from our other web sites, such as RealEstateJournal.com, StartUpJournal.com, The Wall Street Journal Online at WSJ.com, available to you from links located on CareerJournal.com. We also offer a collection of services, such as career counseling, reference checks, recruiter databases and other services, that are provided by third parties through links located on CareerJournal.com. Some of these third-party sites, including those found in the Marketplace section of CareerJournal.com and others, are co-branded and have the CareerJournal.com logo. Please remember that when you visit these other web sites, even the affiliated and co-branded sites, the sites' own privacy policies apply. To read the privacy policies for some of Dow Jones' other web sites please visit our Privacy Center.

Information We Collect

For More Information ...
Each Web site in The Wall Street Journal Online Network has its own privacy policy. There are differences among the policies that reflect the products and services that each site offers. To learn more, visit each site's privacy policy:

Web Site Usage Information: We automatically collect IP addresses and web site usage information from you when you visit our Web Site. This information helps us evaluate how our visitors use and navigate our Web Site on an aggregate basis, including the number and frequency of visitors to each Web page, and the length of their visits.

General: When you use some of the Web Site's special features, such as creating a resume or JobSeek Agent, posting a job, registering for email newsletters and at other times, we will collect personally identifiable information from you that may include your name, , address, e-mail address, credit-card number and facts about your career and similar information. We do not, however, knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of thirteen.

Surveys: We may conduct occasional surveys. For example, when you are within our Web Site, you may see a pop-up window offering you the optional opportunity of participating in a survey. These surveys are entirely voluntary and you may easily decline to participate.

How We Use Information Collected

We may use information in the following ways:

  • For the purposes for which you specifically provided the information, for example, to process your JobSeek criteria and contact you with any openings that meet your criteria.

  • To send you e-mail notifications about our new or existing products and services, special offers, or to otherwise contact you.

  • To allow us to personalize the content and advertising that you and others see based on personal characteristics or preferences.

  • To enhance existing features or develop new features, products and services.

  • To provide advertisers and other third parties with aggregate information about our user base and usage patterns.

We may combine the information that we collect from you on this Web Site with information that you provide to us in connection with your use of our other products, services and web sites.

We use third party network advertisers such as DoubleClick, Inc. to deliver ads to you on our behalf. We may also use third-party service providers to contact you on our behalf, or facilitate some aspects of our Web Site services or fulfill your requests. These network advertisers and service providers may be supplied with or have access to your personally identifiable information solely for the purpose of providing these services to us on our behalf.

Except as specifically set forth in this Privacy Policy, we will not share your personally identifiable information outside of Dow Jones unless you "opt in" to having your personally identifiable information shared with a company that is not affiliated with us.

We may disclose and use personally identifiable information in special circumstances where it is necessary to enforce our Terms of Use (for example, when necessary to protect our intellectual property rights) or when we, in our sole discretion, believe it is necessary or appropriate, in connection with or as the result of a change in ownership of all or a portion of the Services as the result of a merger, acquisition or transfer to another company. We also may disclose personally identifiable information when we, in good faith, believe that the law requires us to do so.

Resumes: Because CareerJournal.com offers assistance with your career, we give you the opportunity to create a resume and store it on our system. When you store your resume on our system, you can choose one of the following options:

  • You can store your resume in our database, but not allow it to be searchable by employers or recruiters. If you choose this option, your resume will not be available to employers unless you ask us to provide it.

  • You can hide your contact information, but allow your resume to be searchable and viewable by employers or recruiters. Should you elect not to share your contact information with employers, but to allow your resume to be searchable, CareerJournal will forward responses from interested recruiters or employers to you.

  • You can allow your resume, including your name and contact information, to be searchable and viewable by employers or recruiters.

IF YOU ELECT TO MAKE YOUR RESUME VIEWABLE BY EMPLOYERS (OPTIONS 2 AND 3), ALL INFORMATION (INCLUDING PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION) THAT YOU INCLUDE IN YOUR RESUME MAY BE VIEWED BY RECRUITERS AND EMPLOYERS. YOU SHOULD NOT ENTER ANY INFORMATION IN THE BODY OF YOUR RESUME THAT YOU WISH TO REMAIN CONFIDENTIAL.

Dow Jones does not screen the credentials of employers or recruiters before allowing them to conduct searches in our profile database. Once you send your contact and other information to an employer or recruiter or once your resume is accessed from our searchable database, Dow Jones is not responsible for the retention, use or privacy practices of that employer or recruiter.

You may remove your resume from our searchable database at any time. However, third parties who accessed the database or obtained a copy of your resume may have retained a copy of your resume in their own files or databases. We are not responsible for the retention, use or privacy of resumes in these instances.

Interactive Tools. CareerJournal.com offers several tools that give you an opportunity to interact with us and other CareerJournal.com users. When you use these features (for example, by posting a message on our Discussions message boards, submitting a question to the Careers Q&A column, or posting an event on our Calendar of Events) we may make public any information that you provide including your name, location and e-mail address.
